Opportunities

The Cushing lab is dedicated to supporting a diverse and supportive environment. Prof. Cushing has intimate experience with mental health issues in academia and runs a support group on campus. Scott can also introduce you to the anonymous mental health listserv on campus if that is of interest, even if you do not join the lab. Everyone in the lab is required to take LGBTQ+ and diversity/inclusion training. That being said, academia is a place of privilege, and these issues cannot be fixed by trainings alone. If there is any additional effort we can make to help you join the lab, or you are curious how the lab's efforts fit into campus culture, please contact Scott Cushing to facilitate a conversation.

For high-school, undergraduate and graduate students: Please send a CV with your inquiry. The major criteria to join the lab is enthusiasm about the research directions and the type of research (instrumentation building). Enthusiasm ranks equally with experience. Current students have past backgrounds ranging from biology, to inorganic/organic chemistry, to physics and physical chemistry.

For postdoctoral associates: Please send a CV and no more than three of your best publications. For postdocs, experience in ultrafast spectroscopy, high-harmonic or x-ray generation, x-ray or excited state theory, high vacuum systems, time-resolved TEM or building TEMs, or entangled photons and the relevant nanophotonics is desirable.
